CHANGE Habits so Our Waterways DON”T CHANGE

IT MATTERS NOW

Aquatic Invasive Species are naturally on ‘high survival mode’ in order to make it in the strange area that they were dumped in.

Our Langlade County, along with Oneida, Marathon, and Lincoln are still safe from Zebra Mussels and Spiny Waterfleas. WE DON’T WANT THEM. Invasive species can impact our aquatic ecosystem and even lower property values. They RUIN lakes and DESTROY fishing. WATERFLEAS AND BABY ZEBRAS ARE SOME OF THE WORST & TOO SMALL TO SEE. BABY ZEBRAS ARE THE SIZE OF A GRAIN OF SAND AND ATTACH LIKE BARNACLES.

NEW HABIT: Check Wisconsin Lakes before heading out. This link is a list of all known invasives per waterbody, by county. KNOWING needs to be part of the plan.

NEW HABIT: Buy only the live bait you plan to use. Bait that is not used and was kept separate from lake water (never hung in the lake) can be saved. An insulated minnow bucket kept in the boat will allow you to keep your bait. (A bait bucket that touches the water or has a used minnow returned to it can spread fish diseases, baby zebra mussels and spiny water fleas.)

NEW HABIT: Before launching consider either drying your watercraft for 5 days before putting it into a new waterway or disinfecting it with diluted bleach water.

NEW HABIT: When leaving…INSPECT everywhere, even the prop.

REMOVE whatever you see. (lake plants, animals, sand, mud)

DRAIN water from boat, motor, holds, etc.

DISPOSE of used minnows and worms in the garbage or woods unless you are next

NEVER MOVE plants or fish in water away from a waterbody.

NEW HABIT: Take your catch home on ICE if you have far to travel.
